6th Grade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts!!!! This year, we will explore a variety of novels, such as The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, Bud, not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis, and Woodsong by Gary Paulsen. Through these novels we will be learning, analyzing, and researching not only the fictional elements such as characters and plot, but the informational and historical information surrounding these novels. For example, with The Lightning Thief we will explore the world of Greek mythology. In Bud, not Buddy, we will explore the era of the Depression, and it's economic woes. Finally, in Woodsong, we learn about the Iditarod race in Alaska, and we read Paulsen's autobiographical account of running his sled dogs in the race.
Writing will be coupled with the above. We will write many research-based essays that include historical information and text-based support (quotes, etc.) to show that we understand the text and the origins of references. Also, we will be writing narrative and compare/contrast essays.
8th Grade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to Language Arts, 8th Graders!!! This year, we will explore a variety of novels, such as: Inside out and Back Again, Unbroken, and The Diary of Anne Frank. Through these novels we will be learning, analyzing, and researching not only the fictional elements such as characters and
plot, but the informational and historical information surrounding these novels. For example, with Inside Out and Back Again, we will look at a historic fictional account of the author's, Thanhha Lai - a Vietnamese refugee, struggle to survive the escape of Communist Vietnam and adapt to life in the United States. In Unbroken, we explore more historical fiction of a former Olympian who defies so many odds, including unbearable conditions as a WWII prisoner of war and survival of his military plane crash on open waters in the Pacific. Finally, in The Diary of Anne Frank, we read and learn about the atrocities of genocide in World War II in historical articles and videos. This precedes the autobiographical account of a thirteen-year-old girl named Anne Frank and her diary of intimate thoughts concerning her war-torn country of Amsterdam, Holland.
Writing will be coupled with the above. We will write many research-based essays that include historical information and text-based support (quotes, etc.) to show that we understand the text and the origins of references. Also, we will be writing narrative and compare/contrast essays.
Students will also share power point presentations aligning the historical text and background of these novels with the fiction itself.
